My Full Disclosure no comments

Topics:Blog, Other

This blog is not primarily financially driven. If it were, I would be trying to sell more stuff.

That said, beginning December 1, 2009, the FTC requires bloggers to provide disclosures whenever there could be hidden interests or unspoken biases related to recommendations.

Sooo: If I interview someone and they grab the bill for lunch, I would need to specify this, as I would if I use an Amazon link that gets me 8 cents instead of an Amazon link that gets me 0 cents. If someone gives me a comfy t-shirt with a logo and I wear it in a photo, ditto. Disclaimers all over.

This would be tedious for me and a continual eye sore for readers. But rules is rules.

To cover my rear and preserve your reading experience, please assume (even though 98% of the time it’s not true!) that, for every recommendation, link, and product I use, the following all hold true:

Topics:Blog, Other, Tools

Got this one emailed to me today.

MEN’s TOOLS

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal  bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

WIRE WHEEL:
Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light.  Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, “Oh, sh*t!”

CIRCULAR SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads.  Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER:
An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up  jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board  principle…. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your futurebecomes.

LOCKING PLYERS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads.  If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intensewelding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire.  Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out ofwhich you want to remove a bearing race.

TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood  projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

BAND SAW:
A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut  good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the  trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST:
A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; butcan also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans.  Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER:
Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is  used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent to theobject we are trying to hit.

UTILITY KNIFE:
Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts.  Especially useful for slicingwork clothes, but only while in use.

SON OF A BITCH TOOL: Any tool that you grab and throw across the room while yelling,  “Son of a Bitch at the top of your lungs.  It is also, most often,  the next tool that you will need.

Misfits @ Historic Southgate House no comments

Topics:Blog, Concerts, Music, Other

Tuesday my wife and I ventured out to the Historic Southgate House to see the Misfits.

When we arrived we were entertained by to local opening acts whose names escape me. After they were done the roadies came on stage to do some last minute warm ups with the instruments & mics. Once they got to the kick drum I looked at my wife and said “This is going to be loud; really load!”

Shortly after the crowd cheered as an overweight, black circle eyed, receding hairline devilock , large spiked vest wearing Jerry Only (age 50) took stage. Almost immediately Jerry started pounding on his Cyclop-skull base. The music was loud, raw and phenomenal!

I have to admit, when I saw him walk onto stage I thought “this is going to be sad” but was proven greatly wrong! Jerry not only belted out great songs but he engaged the audience who were both young and old and all were having fun!

Stupid iPhone Camera!

After an 1.5 hrs our only complaint was that we pretty much lost a lot of hearing for a day and still haven’t received 100% of it back.

That being said, I’ll defiantly go see them again but this time armed with hearing protection!

Now most of our friends who knew we were going to see them kept saying things like “yeah but Danzig isn’t with them” or “without Glenn do you think it will be as good?” To both I have to say “So” and “Yes” and if you are one who’s waiting for the reunion show before you go see them, forget it!

Jerry’s version of the Misfits (he’s taken the band towards metal over the years) has a newer younger following while keeping those of us who grew up with them still going. Also Danzing is 54 and stated many times he’s not looking to tour. So unless they have a geriatrics tour I wouldn’t count on seeing Glenn anytime soon!

In the mean time though, if you’re a Misfits fan who was mad about the parting of Danzig, get over it and go see these guys. You’ll be glad you did!

Just remember hearing protection…

What’s the Woodworking Channel becoming? one comment

Topics:Blog, Other, Woodworking

When the WoodworkingChannel.com first started Glen Huey and myself worked with them in getting content.  We agreed to let them air our Woodworkers Edge DVDs in exchange for the free publicity.  Seemed like a fair trade since we were getting about 3 hours of air time!

So over the next few years WWC had been bought and sold and they redesigned their web site and updated to a higher volume of content.  Sad, but we lost our free publicity and were taken out of the rotation.  (All good things come to and end!)

Well it seems they have changed their ways yet again and this time they are catering to people looking for a different kind of “Wood” then what they started with!

Here are latest two “friend requests” that I’ve received:

Dear Dave,

We just recently purchased a new home with a bit of land.  Our plan is to build a shop on the property so we can go back to parking in the garage as normal fokes do!
