This past week I ventured over to Glen Huey‘s shop to use his jointer (mine is in dire need of blade sharpening) to make tapered legs for the federal card table I’m working on. The next day I was chewing the fat with another woodworker at work who asked how I did it with just a jointer.

After several drawings & step by step directions on the white board in my office he looked at me and said “I just can’t see it!” So I told him I’d go home an take a few step by step photos and that’s when the light bulb went off. I remembered that Popular Woodworking posted a video online of the very technique.

So we logged into the web and did a quick search for it so he could “see” it. After viewing Glen demonstrating the technique he looked at me with that “you have to to be kidding me” look. But before he could speak I said “yes, it’s that damn easy and works every time!”

I believe it was Troy Sexton who first came up with this method and shared it with Pop Wood but prior to learning it from Glen I can say I used each and every jig I could find to make this operation easier. It didn’t matter if it involved a tablesaw or a bandsaw it was a pain to set up and get done. But this, it’s super easy, accurate and CRAZY FAST!

So using the code provided by Pop Wood’s player I embedded the video of Glen demonstration the technique.

Give it try cause once you do you’ll use it every time you need to taper legs!

If you’re not a believer yet maybe you’ll enjoy this video of Orianthi featuring Steve Vai performing: “Highly Strung” instead?!? They’re both phenomenal guitar players!

Tuesday my wife and I ventured out to the Historic Southgate House to see the Misfits.

When we arrived we were entertained by to local opening acts whose names escape me. After they were done the roadies came on stage to do some last minute warm ups with the instruments & mics. Once they got to the kick drum I looked at my wife and said “This is going to be loud; really load!”

Shortly after the crowd cheered as an overweight, black circle eyed, receding hairline devilock , large spiked vest wearing Jerry Only (age 50) took stage. Almost immediately Jerry started pounding on his Cyclop-skull base. The music was loud, raw and phenomenal!

I have to admit, when I saw him walk onto stage I thought “this is going to be sad” but was proven greatly wrong! Jerry not only belted out great songs but he engaged the audience who were both young and old and all were having fun!

After an 1.5 hrs our only complaint was that we pretty much lost a lot of hearing for a day and still haven’t received 100% of it back.

That being said, I’ll defiantly go see them again but this time armed with hearing protection!

Now most of our friends who knew we were going to see them kept saying things like “yeah but Danzig isn’t with them” or “without Glenn do you think it will be as good?” To both I have to say “So” and “Yes” and if you are one who’s waiting for the reunion show before you go see them, forget it!

Jerry’s version of the Misfits (he’s taken the band towards metal over the years) has a newer younger following while keeping those of us who grew up with them still going. Also Danzing is 54 and stated many times he’s not looking to tour. So unless they have a geriatrics tour I wouldn’t count on seeing Glenn anytime soon!

In the mean time though, if you’re a Misfits fan who was mad about the parting of Danzig, get over it and go see these guys. You’ll be glad you did!

Just remember hearing protection…
